Honors Precalculus Teacher: Scott Hutchison Classrooms: 215, 201 Course Expectation Form Teacher: Scott Hutchison Classrooms: 215, 201 Teacher Center: 208 Course Description: Students will begin with a study of trigonometric functions. Circular functions, graphs, identities, the solution of open sentences and practical applications are studied. After trigonometry, the course will build on students’ understanding of linear, exponential powers, and logarithmic functions as they learn mathematical modeling and regression techniques to analyze data. Upon successful completion of this course, students should be able to: π Identify the graphs and equations of linear, quadratic, exponential, logarithmic, polynomial and rational and trigonometric functions. π Use the trigonometric functions to solve both practical and complex problems. Class Expectations: Demonstrate respect towards all. Arrive fully prepared. Participate willingly. Homework Expectations: Attempt ALL problems to the best of one’s ability. Ask pertinent questions during class. Calculator Policy: Technology is an essential element in the teaching and learning of high school mathematics. According to the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, “When technological tools are available, students can focus on decision making, reflection, reasoning, and problem solving.” Students enrolled in Advanced Placement, honors, or college-preparatory mathematics classes should strongly consider purchasing a graphing calculator, preferably a TI-83, TI-83 Plus, or TI-84. It is important for students to gain familiarity with their own calculator in order to use it as a tool during class and for homework. Further, calculators may be used on standardized tests, including portions of the MCAS, PSATs, SATs, and college placement tests.

Textbook Information: Grading System: Grades are based on points. Each student earns a point value out of the total value. For example, 45 out of 60 (45/60 = 75%). Grades consist of the following. Class work – Class work consists of entry/exit assessments, individual and group assignments, and all writing prompts (open response questions, journal questions, etc.) Quizzes – Quizzes are presented approximately mid-chapter and cover numerous sections from the textbook. All multiple section quizzes will be announced at least 2 days prior to the quiz. Tests – Tests are presented at the end of each chapter. Students are responsible for all material covered within the chapter of the textbook as well as material presented during class. Projects are graded as tests. Extra Help: Extra help is offered both before and after school everyday. Students are responsible for arranging times at least one day in advance. Students are also recommended to use the interactive tutorial that accompanies the textbook.
