Asking Why: Transforming Our Perspectives on Race and College Completion Haley Pilgrim Mitzi Day Kristen Salomonson November 7, 2013

Overview  Why did we start on this path?  Brief overview of the achievement gap  Summer research project description  Implications and future directions  Questions and lively discussion

Achievement Gap Committee Genesis  Exploring the status of and solutions for the achievement gap identified as a major goal of Vice President of Diversity & Inclusion and the Provost.   The largest graduation gap exists between white students and black students.   Black students are the largest non-white racial group at the university.   We decided to begin with this specific group.

Current Data - Retention

Current Data - Graduation

Pertinent Questions  Four broad categories of areas to explore.  Pre-College Background  Financial Status  Campus Climate  College Academic Standing

Getting Started  Collect & assess existing institutional data.  Form subgroups on the committee to explore each area in depth.  Institutional Research Office (the awesome Haley) summer intern develops a project to investigate the contribution of many factors on retention and graduation rates.

Thank you.  We look forward to your questions.
