Target Customer When presented as a boomerang, this product offers a fun solo activity to people of all ages. As a frisbee however, the Frisberang transforms into fun for the whole group! This compact toy caters to customers with a low budget by offering two toys in one for a low price. We chose this product because we wanted to create a simple toy with a twist that could be easily taken from place to place. We also wanted our product to stand out amongst the plethora of other outdoor toys.

Conceptual Design Multiple 3D printed identical pieces connected at one point Pieces shift into a boomerang or a frisbee shape As the number of pieces increases, the overall thickness of the toy would increase as well No practical way to secure the pieces into the desired boomerang or frisbee shapes

Actual Design Instead of multiple parts, our finalized design features two wooden boomerang shapes. The first shape features a cutout section, to act as a guide to help slide the Frisberang to and from its frisbee state. The second shape features just a small hole near the top to allow the pieces to connect. We thought that the easiest and more precise way to build our prototype would to simply laser cut the boomerang shapes out of thin pieces of plywood. We also concluded that trying to cut out plastic pieces would be too timely and costly for the purposes of our prototype.

Working Prototype Our working prototype features a screw and bolt to keep the two pieces locked together, as well as small strips of velcro to hold the Frisberang in place when transformed into a frisbee.

Customer Reviews Ava, 7 year old student at St. Joseph’s School: “I had lots of fun playing with this the whole day I had it. My daddy knew how to throw a boomerang and he taught me and I got it to come back to me one time! Then my friend Nat came over and played frisbee. I had a blast!” Taylor, 20 year old club ultimate frisbee player: “I love that I can go to ultimate practice and use the frisbee part, then if everyone leaves after practice and I still want to avoid homework, I can toss the boomerang around by myself, without having to remember to bring a boomerang!”

Cost and Time Estimates Prototype : $2.00 Man hours : 3 Material for 1000 units : $2000 Retail price for one unit : $7.99

Conclusions Given more time to research materials and laser cutting specifications, we would choose plastic as our material, as it is more durable. With more time we would be able research more advanced laser cutting techniques, allowing us to cut the material along multiple planes, allowing improved performance.
