Overview of the workshop Regional Workshop on “OIE Standards – Facilitating safe international trade” April 14-15, 2017. Dubai, UAE Dr Leopoldo Stuardo Escobar Charge de mission – Animal Welfare World Organisation for Animal Health

Background The objective of this workshop is to strengthen the capabilities of OIE Member countries to develop and implement OIE international animal health and welfare standards. Workshop funded by the Australian Department of Agriculture and Water Resources.

Objectives This workshop focuses on: 1) developing theoretical knowledge and understanding of the OIE standards and how they relate to the WTO framework; and, 2) Applying this knowledge and understanding when setting policies on import and export of animals and animal products, in other words, the implementation of OIE standards.

Participants The primary audience of the workshop are officials of the Veterinary Services (VS) who work in the area of import/export (trade policy) and/or those who guide the national application of the OIE standards. In this regard, the workshop is also applicable to OIE Delegates.

Outcomes Understand and to be able to apply OIE science based standards. Understand the need to adopt and promote transparent and predictable market access requirements which will facilitate consistent long- term trade.
