5th Grade Health – Lungs Lesson 4 Pollution In The Community

Review How does the respiratory system work? Air enters the nose where it is warmed, moistened, and cleaned It then enters the trachea (or wind pipe). The Epiglottis prevents food for entering the trachea The trachea branches off into the bronchi Inside your lungs the bronchi divide into many smaller branches called a bronchiole The tiniest bronchioles are called alveoli, which are tiny one celled air sacs which allows the transfer of Oxygen and carbon dioxide

What health problems can our respiratory system have? Allergies Bronchitis Pneumonia Tuberculosis Asthma

What happens to your lungs when you encounter harmful things like germs, tobacco and allergens. Increased Mucus Narrowing of bronchi and bronchiole Pus Swollen membranes Damaged alveoli Tumors Harmful gas exchanged instead of oxygen

So… What are we going to do today??? You know how the repertory system works and what happens to the lungs when they have problems Today, we are going to look more closely at different lung problems related to the community and how we can help our community reduce the amount of lung disease Today we are about saving lives in our community!

What is a community? A community is a place where people work, live and play.

Since people work and live in a community, the health of their lungs often depends upon the quality of air in the community, the location of the community, the type of work done in the community, and the attitude of the people toward smoking. All of these factors will make a community healthy or unhealthy, as far as the lungs are concerned.

Today you will be responsible for your own learning and for teaching others what you have learned. I will create 4 groups You will work with those members to read the information about community lung hazards You will create a public service poster to educate about that hazard

The four groups are… Secondhand Smoke Radon Air Pollution Workplace Lung Hazards
