CS Education in New Mexico Summary points- The enrollment numbers show that there are significant gaps in where CS is taught in NM. In any given year, less than 1% of students in NM are taking a CS course in high school The number of high schools that offer CS has remained relatively steady showing that there is not enough growth of the teachers that are willing to teach CS and schools that are willing to schedule CS classes. There are likely only 25-30 teachers in NM that are teaching CS in any given year, showing that there is an issue with capacity building in our schools.

How are CS classes reported? According to NM PED, use of STARS Codes, 15 STARS codes identified for CS course 0871 1783 0323 0324 0325 0326 0327 0328 0329 0331 0336 0344 0345 0346 0347

Policy New law- make CS count toward graduation requirements Only current 9th graders are eligible Math- After a student shows competency in Algebra 2, the next math class can be a CS class. Must be taught by a math certified teacher Science- After a student shows competency in science, the next science class can be a CS class. Must be taught by a science certified teacher

Policy If you could advise a new Governor and NM PED about CS Policy, what would you ask for?

What would help you and your school do more with CS? Teacher Support What would help you and your school do more with CS?
