Adolescents and Drugs: Trends The use of alcohol, cigarettes, and marijuana increases with age African American adolescents are less likely to drink alcohol or smoke cigarettes then European American or Hispanic adolescents Early adolescent females drink more than males their age Females are as likely as males to smoke cigarettes, but less likely to use marijuana Copyright 2007 McGraw-Hill Higher Education

Adolescents and Drugs: Patterns Gateway hypothesis: drugs progress through a sequence of stages, with the use of one type of drug providing a pathway to the use of other drugs The extent to which adolescents become involved in the use of a drug is important in predicting progression to a higher stage Alcohol is the first drug used Followed by cigarettes Followed by marijuana Copyright 2007 McGraw-Hill Higher Education
