How Blood Gets Around Your Body Blood Vessels! How Blood Gets Around Your Body

Two Systems of Circulation Pulmonary circulation: between heart and lungs (exchange gasses) Systemic circulation: between heart and rest of body cells (gas, nutrient, and waste exchange)

blood from the heart gets around the body through blood vessels There are 3 types of blood vessels a. ARTERY b. VEIN c. CAPILLARY

Arteries carry blood away from the heart. The ARTERY Arteries carry blood away from the heart. the elastic fibres allow the artery to stretch under pressure. As a packet of blood goes thru the pulse is felt. thick muscle and elastic fibres the thick muscle can contract to push the blood along.

Veins carry blood from the body towards the heart. The VEIN Veins carry blood from the body towards the heart. veins have valves which act to stop the blood from going in the wrong direction. thin walls that are slightly pinched

Figure 42.9 Blood flow in veins

The CAPILLARY Capillaries link Arteries with Veins they exchange materials between the blood and other body cells. the wall of a capillary is only one cell thick The exchange of materials between the blood and the body can only occur through capillaries.

Figure 42.12 Blood flow in capillary beds Blood Vessels become smaller as they move away from the heart Approaching capillaries, veins and arteries must get thinner to ensure capillaries do not burst. The smallest veins leading to capillaries are called venules The smallest arteries leading to capillaries are called arterioles.

The CAPILLARY artery ICF vein capillaries body cell A collection of capillaries is known as a capillary bed. artery ICF vein capillaries The capillary bed is surrounded by interstitial fluid – the materials move from the blood to (ICF) to the cells. body cell

LDL and High Fat Diets Low Density Lipoprotein (bad cholesterol) forms deposits in veins Can contribute to: Blood Clots Heart Attacks Cardiovascular disease

Exit Ticket 1. Is Vessel B an artery, capillary, or vein? 2. Which vessels contain valves to prevent the backflow of blood? 3. What is a venule and what does it connect to? A B
