Female Sex Organs: External & Internal Structures

The vulva

The Ovarian & Menstrual Cycle

Ovarian Cycle 21 - 40 days in length (28 days average) Monthly process that produces secondary oocytes Continues until menopause

Phases Follicular (1st 10 days) Period of follicular growth and development Ovulatory (day 11 to ~14) Primary oocyte → meiosis → oocyte released from follicle

Phases (cont.) Luteal (between ovulation and menstruation) Menstrual Lasts about 14 days Follicle becomes corpus luteum If pregnancy occurs, maintains hormone output Menstrual Degeneration of corpus luteum Uterine lining (endometrium) is shed

Menstrual Effects

Premenstrual Syndrome Premenstrual Syndrome(PMS)- collection of physical, emotional and psychological changes that occur 7- 14 days before the menstrual cycle. Premenstrual dysphoric disorder- a condition that affects women sufficiently enough to impair their ability to function normally.

Menorrhagia A prolonged bleeding during the menstrual cycle Happens to all women. However, Menorrhagia is a lot more severe. Signs and symptoms: interfere with daily life, bleeding through 1 or 2 sanitary pads/tampons every hour Causes: conditions such as hormonal imbalance, uterine fibroids, having an IUD, cancer or certain medications.

Dysmenorrhea A more persistent, aching and serious menstrual cramps sufficient that limits a woman's activities. Two types of Dysmenorrhea: Primary Secondary Causes: primary is caused by high levels of prostaglandins How to treat: Primary- aspirin, ibuprofen, birth control pills, and Depo provera.

Amenorrhea When women do not menstruate for reasons other than aging. Two Types of Amenorrhea: 1.primary 2.secondary Causes: primary- late maturers, or other conditions like hormonal deficiencies, abnormal body structure etc. Secondary- stress, lowered body fat, heavy physical training, cysts or tumors. Treatments- lifestyle changes or seeking a doctor to help with the conditions that are causing the amenorrhea

Human Sexual Response

Sexual Response Cycle Masters and Johnson’s four phase model Of sexual response.

Excitement

Phase 1 Vasocongestion increased blood flow to the genitals, causes the swelling of the female clitoris and labia minora and the erection of the male’s penis Vaginal lubrication begins and the labia majora begin to separate Female breasts enlarge Male testes swell and the scrotum tightens

Plateau

Phase 2 The female clitoris becomes highly sensitive and retracts under the clitoral hood to avoid direct stimulation or contact. The male testes withdraw into the scrotum The outer third of the vagina becomes especially engorged with blood and turns a dark purple color

Orgasm

Phase 3 In a female, the vaginal muscles contract and the uterus undergoes repeated ejaculated In a male, repeated contractions occur at the base of the penis and semen is ejaculated

Resolution

Fake Orgasm!!!
