STATE OF THE PROVINCE ACCOMMODATION PROGRESS RAMP project addressing some areas 23 accommodation needs for EC approved A list of the worst offices prepared and submitted to DPW with recommendations DPW promised to look at building new offices in areas where available accommodation is not suitable Management Services and CSIR visited EC to look at location of offices CHALLENGES 30% of office accommodation in the Eastern Cape is satisfactory in terms of location, space, access, visibility Public Works indication that funds for new leases are not available Lack of sponsors for NVC, and challenges major than just painting Justice being impatient at the slow progress in Home Affairs moving from their offices PROGRESS “The client is always right" campaign All Regional Managers, Heads of Offices, District Managers and Head Immigration Services were instructed to brief and train officials under their control with regard to this campaign in the real spirit of Batho Pele. Periodical checks are made at counters to determine if officials are complying to this instruction. Combating activities of street agents To combat the activities of street agents, heads of offices were instructed not to allow these agents on the premises of any office of the Department of Home Affairs in the Gauteng East Area. To get rid of these agents on the sidewalk and in the front of Home Affairs offices, the South African Police Services and Metro Police are called in if necessary. CHALLENGES Due to the shortage of staff to render a service at the counters, and heavy workload, the morale of the officials are on average low. To address this phenomenon, the appointment of more staff should receive priority. With regard to the agents operating on the sidewalks and in the front of Home Affairs Offices, there is not much success due to the fact that within 15 minutes after the police have chased them away, they are back in business.

Combating activities of street agents To combat the activities of street agents, heads of offices were instructed not to allow these agents on the premises of any office of the Department of Home Affairs in the Gauteng East Area. To get rid of these agents on the sidewalk and in the front of Home Affairs offices, the South African Police Services and Metro Police are called in if necessary. CHALLENGES Due to the shortage of staff to render a service at the counters, and heavy workload, the morale of the officials are on average low. To address this phenomenon, the appointment of more staff should receive priority. With regard to the agents operating on the sidewalks and in the front of Home Affairs Offices, there is not much success due to the fact that within 15 minutes after the police have chased them away, they are back in business.
