Exemption from the Reading Portion of the CPT The Office of the Registrar will now award exemption from the Reading portion of the College Placement Test for any 12 credits from other colleges. This includes English or Math or Computer Science courses. This replaces the previous level of 24 credits.

Status Review Please remember that there is no automatic Deans’ Status Review after either the wintersession or the summer session. Students who do well in either time frame will still need to appeal to their Dean to improve their academic status. Students on Restriction or Probation at the end of a Fall or Spring semester cannot be advised that their status will automatically improve after a good grade in the winter or summer. Please advise based on the previous status. Probation—four classes or 14 credits, whichever is fewer Restriction—two classes or 8 credits, whichever is fewer

Appeals Remember that any advisor in the Center can now field an appeal for a course that exceeds the third attempt. Do not send a student to a Dean for a fourth attempt appeal. Please be sure that your signature and comments on the appeal are legible so that it can be entered into STRK by the Office of the Registrar and please be specific with the terms of the appeal. Both Monica and I will field appeals to exceed the “Rule of 15” and the maximum of 20 credits.

Important Reminders I Please be sure that the student has no remaining need for developmental courses. Please do a “developmental inventory.” Remember the 15 credit/credit equivalent limit for students in developmental classes. When a student is adjusting a schedule to be compliant (status or developmental), please be sure to check the entire schedule for other possible needed changes. If a developmental class is deferred, please do the proper paperwork, especially the student’s name. Failure to do so can lead to real complications during Non-Compliance.

Important Reminders II Remember that MAT 014 is not part of the RDG, ENG, and MAT developmental sequence triggering SSD 101. Students in RDG 009 can only take the following credit courses—Math, SSD 101, SPE 121, or a foreign language. They cannot register for BIO 010, CHM 010, CHM 020. Students in majors such as PLS, HRI, and MAD have course sequences that need to be honored as best as possible. (printed on back of the curriculum sheets) Remember that MAT 014 and a working understanding of Microsoft Office or CSC 105/BUS 107 are the prerequisites for CSC 106.

Important Reminders III The importance of understanding the combination math courses with BIO 010 and CHM 010. Students who were unsuccessful in a combination math class must take the lower math class when they retake the course. BIO 123 needs MAT 013, BIO 010, and CHM 020 as pre-requisites while CHM 121/125 need MAT 014 and CHM 020 as pre-requisites. CSC 133 and 161 need MAT 014 as a prerequisite. Advisors cannot sign for courses for transfer students if an RDG exemption is not evident in the system—the RDG test must be taken. Please remember that new students cannot take the challenge test until after they attend NSO.

Another Reminder about CJ Two GE Math courses or Two 4-credit GE Sciences SCI 206 is not a 4 credit GE Science; SCI 220 is the 4 credit Forensic Science. MAT 123 and 124 are recommended for CJ majors but MAT 101 and 102 are allowed.

“Stepping Back” to the “A” Version of Math Students in the one semester version of MAT 010, 013, 014, 129 are permitted to “step back” to the “A” version of the course through the fourth week of a semester. Students need to seek the permission of the Math Department to do so. As mentioned earlier, students who were unsuccessful in a combination math class must take the lower math when they retake the course .

MAT 014 and MAT 129 When advising a student in MAT 014 who wants Precalculus, ask about his/her grade expectation. Students receiving a grade of “B” or higher in MAT 014 are able to register for MAT 129 (one semester version). Students receiving a grade of “C” or “C+” or “B-” must register for MAT 129A (two semester version). 67 students were found non-compliant in this category as they registered for 129 before their grade was finalized.

Repeating the two semester versions of Math Courses Students who are unsuccessful in the “A” version of MAT 010 or MAT 013 or MAT 014 or MAT 129 cannot register for the one semester version as an alternative in the subsequent semester. Students who registered this way were viewed as non-compliant.

Which Math with Which Major? Our handout highlights these selections. Students can always go “higher” in their Math selection if their CPT or SAT scores support the move—most evident in those majors that require BUS 115 or MAT 101. Remember that RAD.AAS now has a GE Math graduation requirement.

Important Changes in Health Tech Admission Criteria for NRB, RAD, and DHY All three curricula require a minimum GPA of 2.75. NRB now requires a grade of at least a “B” in lab biology and lab chemistry. RAD requires a grade of at least a “C” in lab biology and chemistry or physics. If the physics grade is used the student must still complete CHM 010 if necessary.

GE Changes in Nursing Nursing has two GE electives—one of them must be a GE Humanities while the second can be either a GE Communication or GE Diversity or GE Humanities or GE MST or GE Social Science.

NJ STARS Primer for June 2011 Graduates Top 15% of graduating class—2011 graduates are covered for their tuition but not their fees. STARS will cover up to 18 credits a semester but students must register for at least 12 credits. Students have five semesters of eligibility to complete a degree program. Students testing into developmental courses are ineligible for STARS until completion of these courses. The students with developmental needs will have one year at their own expense to become eligible. Students need a 3.0 by the start of their third semester to remain eligible. Students need a 3.25 upon graduation for STARS II eligibility. Heather Coon is the NJ STARS Coordinator and Jossette Greene is the NJ STARS Financial Aid Coordinator.

College Placement Test Exemptions An SAT Verbal or Critical Reading of 540 (within the past five years) exempts a student from both the Reading and Essay portions of the Placement Test. An SAT Math of 530 (within the past five years) exempts a student from MAT 013. Students are placed into MAT 014 but may challenge that placement.

Reviewing the Reading Score Parameters in the CPT 0-60—RDG 009 61-83—RDG 011 84 or better--No Developmental Reading Required A Reading placement can be challenged once.

Writing Placement Test Changes English faculty members now read the essay portion of the College Placement Test which, since May 4. 2009, is graded on an 8 point scale. This replaced the older 12 point scale. 0-3 places the student in ENG 009. 4-5 places the student in ENG 010. 6-8 places the student in ENG 121. Students have one hour to complete the essay and are allowed to use scrap paper while taking the exam. No more sentence skills questions.

Writing Challenge Parameters Students can challenge their writing placement in one of these two scenarios: They score a 3 on the essay and place out of RDG 009—they are trying to place out of ENG 009. They score a 5 on the essay and place out of RDG 011—they are trying to place out of ENG 010.

Reviewing the Bottom Half of the Math Grid A student with an SAT score of 560-599 is not only eligible for MAT 116 and MAT 123, but can now register for MAT 129A without taking a precalculus diagnostic test. A student with an SAT score of 600-649 is eligible for MAT 129 without needing to check for a high school grade in Algebra II as we did in the past.

Challenge Tests for Math For MAT 010, a student remains in the class with a score of 0-19. The student can obviate the class with a score of 20-30. For MAT 013, a student remains in the class with a score of 0-17. The student can obviate the class with a score of 18-25. For MAT 014, a student remains in the class with a score of 0-17 but obviates the class with a score of 18-25. 18-25 will allow MAT 116, 123, or 129A.

More Details to Better Understand the Precalculus Diagnostic Test A student would take this diagnostic test if her/his SAT math score or Accuplacer result placed him/her in MAT 116 or 123 or 129A or 129. The MAT 014 challenge can place you in either 116 or 123 or 129A and so the precalculus diagnostic can be taken in those instances. A student would not take this test to get credit for a class or to bypass a placement based on a grade in a prior MCC math class. 19 or lower places the student in 090/129A. 20-29 places the student in MAT 129. 30-32 places the student in the choice of MAT 131A or MAT 131.

Where is the best place to read the results of the CPT? TSUM remains the best way to read the results of the CPT and all challenge tests. XSWT is the new Colleague screen that provides both the scores and the placement for students’ results. This is the screen that mirrors what students see in their WebAdvisor accounts and on the day of NSO. Very importantly, however, the XSWT screen does NOT provide challenge scores. It is best to steer away from XTRI for CPT scores as that screen has become confusing and very misleading. It still remains helpful, however, for high school lab science (BIO 010, CHM 010, etc), except for Nursing.

New Biotechnology Transfer Curriculum This A.S. degree replaces the A.A.S. degree which is now officially “off the books.” It has been designed for a smooth transfer to Rutgers University. Dr. Narayan states that students should take one Diversity course within their 9 GE credits and remember to register for HED 205 rather than 150. This articulation agreement will be finalized in the very near future with the start date for the construction of a new biotechnology lab in the near future.

Chemistry Pre-Professional CPPST.AS One of MCC’s newer majors is recommended for students interested in professional health careers such as medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, or physical therapy.

GE or not GE?-- That is the Question I In Liberal Arts majors, core humanities and social science requirements must carry the GE designation. The diversity elective must also carry this designation. The divisional elective does not need the GE designation. Students who major in an LA option (such as LAPSY or LASOC) can utilize non-GE electives toward their major/concentration requirements.

GE or not GE?-- That is the Question II Students who were admitted to or changed their major prior to the update in GE classification may still follow their original catalog year to complete their degree. This also applies to the GE classification. There can be flexibility to determine which catalog year is best for the student. However, there can be no “mixing and matching” between catalog years.

A.S. Majors Starting in Fall 2008, Associate of Science majors require one GE Humanities, one GE Social Science, and the student’s choice of either one GE Humanities or one GE Social Science.

Computer Science Reminders I Students in both the Computer Science Information Systems (CSI.AAS) and the Computer Science Network Administration (CSNN.AAS) majors should strive for the CSC 106 course even though CSC 105 can be taken. CSC 161 and CSC 162 are the required Introduction to Programming Courses for both the CSI.AAS and CSC.AS majors. CSC 133 remains the programming course for the CSNN.AAS major.

Computer Science Reminders II CSC 133 and 161 have a prerequisite of MAT 014. CSC 106 has a prerequisite of MAT 014 and either CSC 105 or BUS 107. The Computer Science Department has shared its opinion that all Middlesex County high school students have a sufficient background in Microsoft Office to take this course. CSC 106 is the computer course of choice in LA, BUS.AS, BIO.AS, BPPST.AS, BIOTC.AS, CHM.AS, CPPST.AS, MAT.AS, and PHY.AS.

Health Technology Majors with Financial Aid—LAGEN or BPPST? When advising financial aid students who cannot be OC, please guide them to LAGEN rather than BPPST at the recommendation of Dr. Gerow. Many students in BPPST have done poorly which severely impacts their GPA and, as a result, makes it even more difficult to be admitted. If the student believes he/she can truly handle the course work in BPPST, then that option can be discussed.

Reviewing the Change in Psychosocial Rehabilitation PSR is no longer a competitive admissions major. MAT 116 is the required math course and BIO 106 is the required science course. PSY 123, SOC 121, and PHI 123 are among the other required courses. Please note that no PSR course (except for the PSR 101) can be taken before the completion of all developmental courses and 18 college credits.

CHM 010 vs. CHM 020 CHM 010 is the developmental chemistry course required for students without the proper grade in high school who are interested in the various health technologies. CHM 020 is the developmental chemistry course required for students without the proper grade in high school who are interested in the different science transfer curricula.

Reviewing the BUS. AS Changes Students in BUS. AS register for CSC 105 or CSC 106 with the elimination of BUS 107. A BUS.AS student can now choose either a 3 credit or 4 credit GE science.

Reviewing the MADAD.AAS and MADPH.AAS Changes Students now have their choice of either a GE Math or a GE Science. MAD 102 has been replaced by either MAD 104 or ART 124 or ART 125 as these latter three courses are GE courses. Additionally, there is a new Media Arts--Web Design Option.

New Dietetics Transfer Degree Designed to transfer to Rutgers to pursue a B.S. in Nutritional Sciences via the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences. Some of its features (Bio 123 and 124; General Chemistry I and II; MAT 129; CSC 106; BIO 211; 7 specific HRI courses).

Reemphasizing the Language Diagnostic Test Please remember to place renewed emphasis on the language diagnostic test. If a student wishes to take a modern language course, he/she should always be referred to the diagnostic test unless that student is taking the language for the very first time. In other words, please refer the student to the Testing Center no matter how many years they have studied the language in high school.

Dropping a Class The last day to withdraw from a Spring 2011 class is Monday, April 11th. Please write “student is aware of insurance ramifications” for students dropping a class. Certificates of enrollment indicating a student’s status are created at different times of the semester so it is very possible that an insurance company will learn about a PT status no matter the time of withdrawal.
