Band Together with University High School Sponsorship Band Together with University High School

What We Offer Our Students The University Band serves over 200+ students in the East Orlando community with opportunities in a wide variety of performing ensembles. Our program includes: 3 Concert Ensembles 2 Jazz Ensembles 3 Percussion Ensembles 2 Steel Drum Bands Winter Guard Marching Band Chamber Orchestra Leadership and Character Development Performing Arts Magnet Program (opening Fall 2019)

What We Offer Our Students Music Education is an essential part of any young person’s development. Although music is inherently worth studying for its own sake, music education has additional benefits for students. Music teaches discipline, persistence, problem-solving, and the value of hard work. Research has shown that music education leads to improvements in language abilities, emotional stability, empathy, attention span and focus, and self-confidence.1 One study indicated that students who study music score an average of 63 points higher on the verbal and 44 points higher on the mathematics section of the SAT. Band gets kids off of their phones and makes them go outside to interact with other human beings. “Musical training is a more potent instrument than any other, because rhythm and harmony find their way into the inward places of the soul, making the soul of him who is rightly educated graceful.” – Plato _____ 1. The Benefits of Music Education. Royal Conservatory of Music, April 2014. www.langlangfoundation.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/RCM_MusicEducationBenefits.pdf

What We Offer Our Community In addition to the benefits we offer to our students, the University Band is a highly visible, active part of our East Orlando community. The band performs publicly more than 30 times every school year, in a variety of venues. Some recent performances in the Central Florida area have included: City of Orlando Veteran’s Day Parade Central Florida Puerto Rican Parade UCF Percussion Festival EPCOT International Festival of the Arts Walt Disney World “Wine & Dine” Marathon multiple corporate events and conventions

What We Offer Our Community In addition, the band regularly travels outside Florida to represent out community on the national stage. Some of these events have included: Tournament of Roses Parade (Pasadena, CA) Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade (New York, NY) NATO Parade of Nations (Norfolk, VA) Saint Patrick’s Day Parade (Savannah, GA and Chicago, IL) Music for All National Percussion Festival (Indianapolis, IN)

The University Classic Each October, the band hosts The University Classic, an FMBC (Florida Marching Band Coalition) Regional Competition that brings in bands from all across the State of Florida (and sometimes beyond) to perform for a panel of adjudicators and an audience of over 2000 people!

Funding the Band The band’s yearly operating budget is about $80,000 per year, to pay for instructional staff, equipment, travel, and other expenses. (Did you know one tuba costs about $6000?) Additional, an out-of-state trip (we try to do one every other year so each student can have two opportunities) can double the operating budget for the year. Unfortunately, the school board is only able to provide about 5-10% of these costs. The rest is raised by our students and parents to make these incredible experiences possible. You can help to invest in our community’s future leaders by sponsoring this incredible program.
