EQ: How do families, groups, and communities influence our lives? Activating Strategy: What groups can you think of that seem to exist in most cultures? Teaching Strategies: View United Streaming Video, “How to Study Cultures: How Social Organizations Define a Cultures.” Assessment Prompt 1: Students will answer questions about how to study cultures (see How to Study Cultures Handout.) Go over questions about how to study culture. Discuss how these cultural groups affect their lives. Assessment Prompt 2: Students will make a list of 5 ways that cultural groups affect their lives. Discuss profile of Myanmar police, Afghani Taliban fighters, serial killers, etc. Assessment Prompt 3: Students will discuss other historical figures that influence our culture in tables and will present an example. Summarizing Strategy: Students will answer the essential question by completing the graphic organizer (in slides) which asks them to list 3 ways that families, groups, and communities influence our lives. 1. What types of social organizations or groups exist in most cultures? Family Religion Government Education/schools Recreation Ethnic groups

2. What family members are included in a nuclear family? Mother Father Their children

3.What family members are included in an extended family? Nuclear family Aunts and Uncles Cousins and grandparents

4. Why do families exist in cultures around the world? Families are the basic economic unit. Each member has a job to do which affects the rest of the family.

7. What is the difference between formal and informal education. Formal education is organized by age and/or ability and taught by a teacher in a school. Informal education is taught by family, friends, or mentors. This also includes information from the media. (T.V., radio, internet, ads, etc.)
