What are some foods that you love? What are some foods that you don’t like very much? How would you feel if you had to eat whatever food was given to you, even if you really didn’t like it? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xuGaciuDhAs

Did you know that one in five children in America don’t have enough food to eat? What are some ways in which hunger made the narrator’s life hard? How might this effect her future?

Today we will be creating a fruit bowl of ideas for how we can work to end hunger in America. Each of you will receive a template for a piece of fruit. Working in your buddy pairs, you will each need to come up with an idea for something that you could actually do to stop children in our country from going without food. Once your have written your idea on your piece of fruit, cut your fruit out and color it in. You will then bring it to your teacher so that your fruit can be added to your class bowl of ideas. Try to be creative with your ideas, and challenge to write in complete sentences, if you can. Older buddies, you can help your younger buddies with this.

Dear Lord, I thank you for the food that I am given to eat each day. When I give thanks for my own daily food, I will include all who are hungry, especially other children, and not take for granted how blessed I really am. Amen

Only some types of Americans are poor and hungry. Fact or Myth? Only some types of Americans are poor and hungry. Myth! Hunger and poverty affect all types of people in the United States. Whites, African Americans, Hispanics, Native Americans and Asian Americans all suffer from these problems. Fact or Myth? The hungry can live all over the country. Fact! Hunger can be found in all kinds of communities in America. People who have trouble affording food live in the suburbs and the country, as well as the city. Fact or Myth? Poor people can’t afford food because they don’t work. Myth! Many people who are living in poverty have jobs, but they do not make enough money to pay for all of the things that they and their families need, such as food and clothing. Fact or Myth? Homeless people and poor people aren’t the same. Fact! Although many poor people are homeless, most poor people live in house or apartments. Whilst they may have enough money to pay rent, they have little left over to buy other necessities.
