Close Reading revision Linking Questions

Linking formula When answering a linking question you should always use the linking formula to show how that sentence both refers back to and introduces ideas. “Quote from linking sentence” refers back to ideas discussed directly before linking sentence. “Quote from linking sentence” introduces idea introduced directly after. Your answer MUST link both backwards and forwards, unless otherwise stated.

Example Q. The car is equally as impressive inside. Black leather seats, heated in the winter, set off the sleek design. The CD player is a work of art, sunk into the smooth dashboard . . . A. “equally as impressive inside” shows that the previous information must have dealt with the outside of the car. “Inside” links forward to the description of the interior.

In 1975 ‘Jaws’ set the hearts of its viewers thumping in time to the theme tune. A Great White enjoyed a feeding frenzy on unsuspecting tourists. Now, however, scientists have discovered facts that suggest the film makers’ facts are false. In actual fact the Great White is a fussy eater . . . The real star of the movie is, of course, the ship; no-one is ever going to watch ‘Titanic’ and wonder what happened at the end. However, Cameron added enough human interest and romance to the story to keep you interested, despite the inevitable ending. We get beautiful Rose, engaged to the hideous Billy Zane, and pursued by Jack . . .

3. She had more vigour than any woman I had ever known of that age 3. She had more vigour than any woman I had ever known of that age. She could outrun teenagers half her years, and seemed to be always on the go. That’s what made it all the more shocking when the heart attack occurred, and her health was lost. From then she became the wizened, frail old woman she’d always hated. 4. In fact, nothing appeared to be further from his intentions. Indeed he seemed determined to do the opposite, examining each minute detail in the garden, nowhere near the crime scene. 5. She was surrounded by well wishers who told her how beautiful she looked. Everyone seemed to want to take her picture and comment on how stunning she looked, beaming at another perfect bride. Yet inside she had never felt so alone. No-one asked her how she felt, no-one noticed the fixed smile and longing gaze.

6. Around the world William Shakespeare is one of the best loved of all playwrights. Most people can name at least one of his plays, and lines from his works are ingrained into our psyche and language. Yet despite all the knowledge of his work, little is known of the life of Shakespeare. We know nothing of his life in London . . . 7. Mary Queen of Scots was indeed a beautiful woman. Fine featured with perfect skin, she matched the beauty found in her portraits. Small and petite, she fitted perfectly into how woman of the period ‘should look’. Not only her appearance, but her character too , made her perfect queen material. She was extremely well educated, charming and inspired many writers.
