Washington Roebling By: John Moran Class 5-318

Those people were right. I am a genius!!!!!! INTRODUCTION Those people were right. I am a genius!!!!!! Do you know who Washington Roebling was? Have you ever seen him in real life? Washington Roebling was the man who built the famous Brooklyn Bridge. I don’t think people know enough about him. That is my topic. I have many facts. Did you know his brother was on the Titanic?!

BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION Washington A. Roebling was born in Saxonburg, Pennsylvania in 1837. Like his father, John A. Roebling, Washington studied engineering in college. Washington was promoted to lieutenant colonel in the Civil War for gallant services. He fell in love with his commanding officer’s sister, Emily. Emily and Washington were soon married.

THE BUILDING OF THE BROOKLYN BRIDGE During the building of the Brooklyn Bridge, Washington developed “The Bends,” or as they call it, “Cassion disease.” With history as a soldier, Washington insisted that he must still help with the building of the bridge. This influenced his wife to let him watch the building through his window.

Accomplishments Accomplishments made by Washington Roebling are building the Brooklyn Bridge and participating in the Civil War. Roebling was on the north side in the Civil War. Even though Washington was born in Pennsylvania, he grew up in Brooklyn. During the war, he was promoted to lieutenant.

Others’ Opinions Washington Roebling was known for his great personality and his brilliant ideas. Many people thought he was crazy for his ideas, but they were wrong. Roebling was a brilliant man. He created the first suspension bridge. Also, he used diagonal cables to make the bridge stronger. A ringmaster had 130 elephants cross the bridge and nothing happened! Washington had created the greatest way to make a bridge stronger.

conclusion In conclusion, Washington Roebling was a brave and smart man. In 1926, Washington Roebling died of sickness. In 1883, when the Brooklyn Bridge opened, Washington couldn’t even leave his house because he was so sick. Today, the Brooklyn Bridge is 125 years old and is the most traveled bridge in New York City.
