AIM: How do the moon and sun affect events on Earth?

Why does the moon affect the tides? What causes the tides? The gravitation between the Earth, moon and sun. Even though the moon is smaller, it is much closer to the earth than the sun. Why does the moon affect the tides? The moon is 6000km closer to the surface of the earth than to the center of the earth!

The force of gravity the moon exerts on our surface is stronger than the force exerted on Earth’s center.

The moon actually causes the surface of the Earth to bulge slightly as it moves around us. The bulge moves with the moon! Water is affected much more than the rock and soil on our surface.

The tides rise and fall twice a day. So, How do the tides work? As the Earth rotates, the regions of water closest to the moon bulge (high tide) and the other regions of water fall ( low tide) The tides rise and fall twice a day.

Neap Tide Where does the sun come in? The sun also pulls on the Earth. If the sun and moon form a right angle there is little difference between high tide and low tide. Neap Tide

If the sun and moon are lined up with the Earth - FULL MOON & NEW MOON- the tides are extremely high and extremely low. Spring Tide
