Cardiac Resuscitation (CR) Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) Course CR - AED Cardiac Resuscitation (CR) + Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) LRC

Objectives At the end of this course participants should be able to demonstrate: - How to assess the collapsed victim How to call the emergency services How to perform chest compression (CR) How to operate an automated external defibrillator safely LRC

Backgroud In Europe every 45 seconds a cardiac arrest takes place Bystander CPR is a vital intervention before arrival of emergency services Early resuscitation and prompt defibrillation (within 1-2 minutes) can result in >60% survival LRC

Chain of survival LRC

No Response No Breathing Approach safely Check response Shout for help Open airway Check breathing Call 112 100-120 chest compressions LRC

Approach safely For : Approach safely Check response Yourself Other people helping Patient Check response Shout for help Open airway Check breathing Call 112 100-120 chest compressions LRC

Check Response Approach safely Check response Shout for help Open airway Check breathing Call 112 100-120 chest compressions LRC

Check Response Shake shoulders gently Ask “Are you all right?” If he responds : Leave as you find him. Find out what is wrong. Reassess regularly. LRC

Check Breathing Search for a normal respiration Look Listen Feel Maximum 10 sec LRC

Abnormal Breathing – Gasp Occurs shortly after the heart stops in up to 40% of cardiac arrests Described as barely, heavy, noisy or gasping breathing Recognise as a sign of cardiac arrest LRC

Call 112 Approach safely Check response Shout for help Open airway Check breathing Call 112 100-120 chest compressions LRC

100 Chest Compressions Approach safely Check response Shout for help Open airway Check breathing Call 112 100-120 chest compressions LRC

100 – 120 Chest Compressions Place the heel of one hand in the centre of the chest Place other hand on top Interlock fingers or avoid putting pressure on the side of the chest Compress the chest Rate 100 – 120 min-1 Depth 5 – 6 cm Equal compression : relaxation When possible change CPR operator every 2 min LRC

Attach pads to victims bare chest LRC

Analysing Rhythm Do not touch the victim LRC

Shock indicated Stand clear Deliver shock LRC

Shock delivered: Follow AED instructions 100 – 120 / minute LRC

No shock advised: Follow ED instructions 100 – 120 / minute LRC

If victim starts to breathe normally place in recovery position LRC

CPR in children Adult CPR techniques can be used in children + mouth to mouth breathing Compressions : at least 1/3 of the depth of the chest LRC

AED in children > 8 years use adult AED 1- 8 ans use pediatric pads / settings if available (otherwise use adult mode) < 1 year use only if manufacturer instructions indicate it is safe LRC
