WEATHER AND CRIME

WEATHER AND CRIME Weather and crime was not seriously studied until the 1960s when a series of riots erupted Since then, researchers have been trying to understand why it is that people tend to commit more crimes in the warmer summer months as opposed to the colder months.

WEATHER AND VIOLENT CRIMES Many studies have found that increasing temperature have a large increase on violent crimes. Violent crimes tend to peak in the summer months and dip during the winter. It is shown that family abuse is heightened in the summer as well.

CHIGAGO WEATHER AND CRIME 2010

CHIGAGO WEATHER AND CRIME 2011

CHIGAGO WEATHER AND CRIME As you can see in the previous two graphs, violent crime rates were higher in the summer months. In 2011 however, crime rates are lower in the beginning and then spike in July. This is because the temperatures were either cooler than 80 degrees or hotter than 90 degrees that year. Found by looking at the weather almanac

WEATHER AND NON-VIOLENT CRIMES No link between weather and non-violent crimes has been seen. However, those who are homeless have confessed to committing low scale crimes to be able to have a warm bed and food in the wintertime. http://articles.sun-sentinel.com/2013-03-08/news/fl-shelter-from-the-cold- 20130308_1_jail-cell-warm-jail-homeless-shelter
