Symbolism Abstract vs. Concrete

Dove! = Symbolism Peace Love Harmony Duh! The idea that a person, place, thing, or event has meaning in itself and that it also stands for something else. Dove! Peace Love Harmony = Duh!

Symbolism Symbols can be distinguished by the quality of being abstract or concrete. Symbols can be very recognizable and widely accepted, or some symbols, as in literature, can be viewed as imaginative and subjective.

Concrete Symbols Concrete symbols are more easily associated with what they represent. Concrete symbols reference a specific idea, person, place, event.

These symbols deal with generalities and intangible concepts. Abstract Symbols The less a symbol resembles what it represents, the more abstract that symbol is. These symbols deal with generalities and intangible concepts. Example: The journey: can stand for the search for truth, identity, freedom, growing up, etc.
