How Active Are You? How Sedentary Are You? Created by T Stivers Schindewolf Intermediate Chapter 4 Day 2

Group discussions: Two teens decide to include physical activity in their lives. Kayla begins walking to school, in-line skating, and swimming. Kyle decides to lift weights for an hour every night. After a week, Kyle gives up on weight lifting. Kayla, however continues to be active. Why did Kayla’s plan work better than Kyle’s?

60% of adults and 33% teens are overweight CDC Reports: 60% of adults and 33% teens are overweight 35% of teens are not active (active 3-5 per wk) Activity declines a bunch during the teen years Only 25% of teens have PE classes

Mentally PHYSICALLY Socially Negative Effects of Sedentary Lifestyle Unhealthy weight gain Osteoporosis – condition of bone density decreasing Reduced ability to manage stress Mentally PHYSICALLY Cardiovascular disease Less opportunities to hang around active friends Socially Type 2 Diabetes – body cannot convert food into energy
