English Reading. Speaking and Listening – class talks. Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling. Shared Reading and Writing. Phonics.

Reading is the key to the whole curriculum! Please aim to hear your child read daily and record it in their reading record. The importance of home reading cannot be stressed enough and we ask for your support with this. Daily if possible. Please record any reading done and any comments in your child's Reading Record (which is checked weekly), so that we can praise and give stickers to your child as well as respond weekly to any problems or queries you may have about your child's reading.

Reading Reading is about more than de-coding. It is about comprehending what your child has read. Ask questions about the book. Fact retrieval, as well as inference… how would the character be feeling and why? Always backed up with evidence from the text.

Accelerated Reader A published computerised scheme, being used in primary settings and high schools nationally.

What Is Accelerated Reader? Based on the principle, ‘practice makes perfect’, AR is a computerised learning system tailored to meet the specific needs of each child. It is NOT a substitute for Guided Reading in school or reading books from home, should your child wish to do so.

STAR Tests Your child has completed a computerised reading assessment, known as STAR. The test used multiple-choice questions that were adjusted depending on your child’s responses. After completing the test, a computerised score was produced reflecting your child's Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD = reading range).

Practice at an Appropriate Level The reading range is your child’s INDEPENDENT reading level, the range in which they read best. All children need to be heard to read and discuss what they have read with an adult in order to improve their comprehension skills. Books within your child’s reading range will contain new vocabulary that will challenge them without them being frustrated.

Your child chooses a book within the ZPD – up to 10 boxes to choose from in the library- we encourage children to start at the lower end of the range in order to get the most out of the scheme. Your child reads the book. Your child does the online quiz – at school. This gives a % score and points based on reading comprehension. The teacher will monitor progress and intervene where necessary.

Home Access You will be sent individual invitations and passwords in the near future.

Handwriting In year two your child will be expected to develop a fluent cursive handwriting style. All lower case letters start on the line. Children will write regularly in their handwriting books and be encouraged to use cursive handwriting in all their written work. Capital letters should not be joined to the rest of the word.

IF A CHILD CAN’T SAY IT, A CHILD CAN’T WRITE IT The Big Write The children will complete an extended piece of writing most weeks. Talk for writing. Explain… You do not need to write anything down. Your child needs you to do this for them in order to give them the confidence to write independently and concentrate on the mechanics of writing. Based on the premise… IF A CHILD CAN’T SAY IT, A CHILD CAN’T WRITE IT

Mathematics There are certain areas of mathematics that can be supported easily at home. Telling the time. (A great Christmas present!) Money. (Whilst out shopping!)

Homework A chance to share work with your child. Reading books – Please hear your child read every day. Maths problems or English on a Friday. Please help your child but don’t do work for them.

Class Talks Class talks build on show and tell from Year 1. Talks can be about anything that the children are interested in. They should last roughly five minutes. Please help with any research but try not to come up with a ‘script’. Dates for talks can be found on the school website.

Class Talks Unfortunately due to computer virus’ in school we are unable to allow children to transfer work using a USB pen. They can however display power-points or photos using a CD or may e-mail them to myself in school. E-Mail address :senco@poulton-st-johns.lancs.sch.uk

LEARNING LOGS What we hope to achieve. The children will learn to express themselves in a variety of different ways. They will develop their ability to think creatively. They will learn crucial research skills. They will learn in an exciting and flexible way. They will learn from each other and share their learning. Most importantly they will learn with you. You will find more information about Learning Logs on our school website.

Routines Reading books and reading records. Water bottles. Pumps and P.E kits for Monday and Friday. Spelling test every Thursday. We are here to help, come and see us anytime.
