Analyzing the “STYLE and STRUCTURE” of informational text Connect: Recently we have been working on our Literary Essays. There were certain things we needed to include in our essays in order for them to be considered “literary essays”. If we did not have these certain parts, we could not call those essays, “literary essays”. Different types of writing have specific parts that make it a special kind of writing. Our literary essays had a certain “STYLE and STRUCTURE” (teaching point), so when people read them, they automatically know that it is a literary essay. Today we will take a look at how writers use “STYLE and STRUCTURE” to make their writing more interesting. We all know that the purpose of informational text is to teach the reader something. Understanding the “STYLE and STRUCTURE” of the reading helps with your understanding of the information being shared. Let’s take a look at some examples

Understanding “Style and Structure” really helps with comprehension of the subject matter. Style and Structure of this article: Captions- a sentence the tells about a picture. Map- a picture that shows the location of things or a place. Heading- tells what each section is about. Subheading- organizes information into smaller sections. Glossary- lists new or important words and tells what they mean. Magnification- shows details in close-up picture. Bold print- shows you new or important words.

In writing, authors use a variety, or different kinds, of text features to create their “Style and Structure”.

We are going to write our very own informational texts on a topic that has to be approved by Mr. Wells. Before we begin writing though, I would like for you to analyze some informational text, using what we learned about “STYLE AND STRUCTURE” today. In groups of two, you will choose an informational text from the back table. Using your text features handout, find examples from your text. Mark these examples with sticky notes.
