Forces on the base of the spine (L5–S1 forces) that result from two different methods of lifting a load weighing 150 N. When the lifting is done with the legs relatively straight, there is an L5–S1 shear force of 500 N and a spinal compression force of 1800 N. When the lifting is done with the knees bent, the L5–S1 shear force is only 340 N, but the spinal compression force is 2700 N.
