2015 ALDOT PRE- CONSTRUCTION CONFERENCE CONTRACTOR’S PERSPECTIVE ON CROSS SLOPE MAY 7 , 2015

CROSS SLOPE CURVE SECTIONS TANGENT SECTIONS GENERAL ISSUES OTHER ISSUES

CURVE SECTIONS

CURVE SECTION DATA NEEDED PC STATION PT STATION BEGIN TRANSITION STATION END TRANSITION STATION REQUIRED CROSS SLOPE

CURVE SECTION DATA ISSUES PC STATION AND PT STATION ON PLANS OFTEN DO NOT MATCH PC STATION AND PT STATION IN FIELD. REQUIRES FIELD ADJUSTMENTS DURING CONSTRUCTION. POSSIBLE QUANTITY CHANGES. SUGGEST ALDOT VERIFY AND STAKE FIELD LOCATIONS PRIOR TO PROJECT LETTING.

TANGENT SECTIONS

TANGENT SECTION DATA NEEDED CROSS SLOPE REQUIRED OR MATCH EXISTING CROSS SLOPE.

GENERAL ISSUES

GENERAL ISSUES CROSS SLOPE VERSUS SPREAD RATE. IF MATCH EXISTING CROSS SLOPE, SPREAD TOLERANCES CAN GENERALLY BE MAINTAINED. IF CORRECTING CROSS SLOPE, SPREAD RATE TOLERANCES CAN NOT BE MAINTAINED. PAY ITEM NEEDS TO BE SPECIFIED AS LEVELING.

GENERAL ISSUES MILLING VERSUS LEVELING. EASIER AND MORE ECONOMICAL TO MILL IN CROSS SLOPE VERSUS LEVELING IN CROSS SLOPE WHEN ROADWAY STRUCTURE ALLOWS. NO SIGNIFICANT COST INCREASE TO MILL 1” VERSUS 2” VERSUS 3” , ETC.

GENERAL ISSUES MANY TIMES EASIER TO MILL IN TANGENT SECTIONS THAN CURVE SECTIONS. CURVE SECTIONS GENERALLY LACK CROSS SLOPE RATHER THAN HAVING TOO MUCH CROSS SLOPE. PARTIAL LANE MILLING CAN STILL BE EVALUATED.

Economics Of RAP Value Of RAP Assume AC Liq. Ton @ $450.00 / Ton Assume Virgin Agg. @ $ 15.00 / Ton RAP 5% AC And 95% Aggregate Per Ton Value Of RAP .05 x $450.00 = $22.50 .95 x $ 15.00 = $14.25 One Ton Of RAP = $ 36.75* *Does not include costs to mill, haul and process

GENERAL ISSUES MILL / FILL INFORMATION TABLES. PROVIDES APPROXIMATE DEPTHS OF MILL / FILL ALONG PROJECT AT VARIOUS STATIONS. CHECK ACCURACY OF DATA. VALUABLE INFORMATION FOR CONTRACTOR TO EVALUATE DEPTH OF FILL VERSUS MAXIMUM ASPHALT LAYER LIFT THICKNESS. DETERMINES HOW MANY PASSES REQUIRED TO PLACE REQUIRED LEVELING THICKNESS.

GENERAL ISSUES NEED ACCURATE QUANTITIES OF MILLING AND LEVELING FOR BIDDING PURPOSES. LEVELING QUANTITIES ARE MORE FREQUENTLY INACCURATE THAN MILLING QUANTITIES. QUANTITIES ARE GENERALLY UNDERESTIMATED. SITE VISIT BY DESIGNERS MAY HELP EVALUATION OF THESE AND OTHER QUANTITIES.

GENERAL ISSUES ROADWAY DENSITY FOR LEVELING LAYERS SHOULD BE MAXIMUM ACHIEVEABLE DENSITY FROM ROLLER PATTERNS ESTABLISHED BY NUCLEAR / NON-NUCLEAR GAUGES. CORES AND TARGET PAY FACTORS ARE NOT REASONABLE FOR ROADWAY DENSITY FOR LEVELING LAYERS.

OTHER ISSUES

OTHER ISSUES WHENEVER POSSIBLE ESTABLISH PAY ITEMS AND QUANTITIES FOR REQUIRED WORK. MAKING REQUIRED WORK SUBSIDIARY OBLIGATION OF OTHER PAY ITEMS CREATES UNKNOWN QUANTITIES / SCOPE OF WORK FOR CONTRACTOR. UNKNOWN = ADDED $$$$$$$$.

OTHER ISSUES CONTRACTOR REVIEW OF PRELIMINARY PLANS FOR COMPLEX / LARGE PROJECTS. CONTRACTORS CAN SUBMIT IDEAS ON SEQUENCE OF CONSTRUCTION, CONSTRUCTABILITY OF PROJECT, ETC. MONTHS BEFORE TWO WEEK BID ADVERTISING WINDOW. MORE COMPLETE AND ACCURATE PLANS = LESS UNKNOWN = REDUCED $$$$$$.

OTHER ISSUES TEMPORARY EDGE LINE STRIPE ON RESURFACING PROJECTS. ELIMINATING PAY ITEM GENERALLY DOES NOT REDUCE PROJECT COST. CONTRACTOR LIABILITY ISSUES. SCORING PAVEMENT SHOULDERS.
