DER Working Group on Gender and Diversity in Disasters The Checklist

Vision and Mission Vision: DER member’s assistance is appropriate and reaches the most vulnerable people in disasters. Mission: The DER members ensure that gender and diversity issues are appropriately addressed in disaster response.

Objectives To make the disaster response organisations aware and committed so that the diverse needs of different groups are addressed effectively in disaster response. To improve the DER Group capacity on gender and diversity analysis by: –common understanding on G & D sensitivity; –common standards on G & D in emergency field operations; To create a platform where DER members can share and learn their experience and exchange the views, limitations and challenges on the theme.

Background DER Group met to share experience and discuss opportunities and challenges on Gender issues in disaster response (July 2003) DER Group formed the Working Group on Gender and Diversity in Disasters (Dec. 2004)

Member Agencies GoB DRR CDMP DWA UN UNDP UNICEF WFP (cum Secretariat) NGO Oxfam (Lead agency) Action Aid CARE Christian Aid Concern ITDG WVB

Why do we need the checklist ? Lesson learnt from flood response and rehab of 2004 propose a minimum standard of gender and diversity responsive programme across the board to chart available capacities and weaknesses and formulate recommendations for the most appropriate strategy for establishing the proposed “minimum” standard

What is G & D checklist ? planning and evaluation tool (designed to be simple but effective) collated from different documents and papers and adapted by inclusive consultation process living document – to be updated each year by sub group designed to be used by mid to senior level disaster managers who are usually responsible for planning, managing and/or evaluating response programmes.

Purpose of the list ? a measurement tool to help establish a minimum agreed standard of gender and diversity responsive programme across DERG a planning tool to ensure gender and diversity is integrated throughout response an evaluating tool to find out whether responses maintained the minimum agreed standard (gender and diversity) at all stages

How you can help? Read it, let us know your views Be frank and constructive when you give feedback let your Organisation know about the checklist, promote it and advocate for organisational commitment once it is agreed by all Please use it as a working document

Thank You
