MATTHEW 5:21-26 You have heard that it was said to those of old, “You shall not murder; and whoever murders will be liable to judgment.” But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment; whoever insults his brother will be liable to the council; and whoever says, “You fool!” will be liable to the hell of fire. So if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there before the altar and go. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift. Come to terms quickly with your accuser while you are going with him to court, lest your accuser hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the guard, and you be put in prison. Truly, I say to you, you will never get out until you have paid the last penny.

MATTHEW 7:24-29 “Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.” And when Jesus finished these sayings, the crowds were astonished at his teaching, for he was teaching them as one who had authority, and not as their scribes.

EVERYONE NEEDS RECONCILIATION Jesus’ interpretation of the law raises the moral stakes. Anger = murder Insults lead to judgment Jesus takes unreconciled relationships very seriously. The first step to reconciliation is to understand that we need it. We are not innocent.

THE IMPORTANCE OF RECONCILIATION We can’t separate our vertical relationship with God from our horizontal relationship with others. It is my responsibility: make the first move Reconciliation is URGENT Reconciliation is central to the gospel
