HIE Isolde QW cavity tuner Niobium sputtered on bulk copper substrate 4.5 K, 101.28 MHz, 6 MV/m , 10 W Coarse tuning done by mechanical trimming Requested fine tuning range 36 kHz, resolution 0.5 Hz Initial Cu-Be “oil can” shape design Costly sensitivity 11 kHz/mm Range 100 kHz higher than required Range of fine tuning range based on uncertainty frequency at cold during testing prototypes Flat plate design Machined to 0.3 mm in OFE copper + optimised tip gap Courtesy of : Kurt Artoos Walter Venturini Delsolaro

HIE Isolde QW cavity tuner OFE Cu : improved temperature margin for Nb layer for power dissipated (L. Alberty) Drawback: mechanical stresses in the tuning plate, very local plastification during first cycle Not a problem Courtesy of : Kurt Artoos Walter Venturini Delsolaro

HIE Isolde QW cavity tuner Motorization tuner outside cryostat for reliability and cost reasons Operation under traction (small range available in push, 0.6 mm at tuning plate) 1.8 Nm bi phase stepper motor with torque limiter at 1 Nm. Micro stepping 8000 steps/turn 1 mm pitch lubricated M6 Metric screw in bronze Measured resolution motor 0.1 to 0.2 µm Hysteresis under load : 1 to 2 µm Reliability feature: Motor completely exchangeable without Dismounting the cryomodule (includes possible exchange of vacuum passage pulling rod ) Courtesy of : Kurt Artoos Walter Venturini Delsolaro

HIE Isolde QW cavity tuner Tuner lever system: Compact system Two levers with Ti double knife edge pivots Flexural link between two levers Divides motion + forces by factor 10 with very low friction Courtesy of : Kurt Artoos Walter Venturini Delsolaro

19th Catia/SmarTeam Users’ Forum STUDY INPUTS – KEY DATAS Stepping motor : 8000 steps/rotation Motor Stroke : +50mm / -6mm Tuning plate distortion : -5mm / +0,6mm Reduction ratio tuner stroke / motor stroke : 1/10 Very narrow space beneath the cavity Tuning range : 36000 Hz Tuning accuracy : +/- 0,5 Hz  Tuning plate theoretical resolution accuracy : +/- 40 nanometers !!! No stick/slip phenomenon allowed due to the requested resolution ! Necessity to use friction-free pivots + a virtual pivot due to the lack of space + resolution requirements 02/04/2015 19th Catia/SmarTeam Users’ Forum

HIE Isolde QW cavity tuner Results Pei Zhang Small cycles hysteresis 100 cycles 3Hz Variation due to pressure change 0.08Hz/step Larger cycles hysteresis 0.6Hz 0.11Hz/step Courtesy of : Kurt Artoos Walter Venturini Delsolaro 15

HIE Isolde QW cavity tuner Full tuner range 39 kHz Fatigue testing show no significant changes in behavior tuner Back lash when changing from pull to push due to change of contact in knife edge pivot (not expected operation situation) The hysteresis and resolution correspond to what was measured on the motor. This could be further reduced by using Planetary roller screws (not required for HIE ISOLDE) Coarse range 39 kHz Pull to push Courtesy of : Kurt Artoos Walter Venturini Delsolaro
