It’s not as scary as it seems Science Fair It’s not as scary as it seems

Scientific Method Purpose This is where you tell the reasons you are conducting this experiment. What do you want to learn? This is done in a brief sentence statement. Example: The purpose of this project is to determine if a teacher is necessary to keep noise level down in a classroom.

Scientific Method Hypothesis This is where you make your prediction on what you think will happen when you run your experiment. A hypothesis is written as a statement sentence. Example: I predict the classroom will be piercing without a teacher.

Scientific Method Materials This is a complete list of everything that you use to complete the experiment. The list has to include all materials another person would need to conduct the experiment. Example: Classroom full of students Teacher willing to leave Paper Pencil Decibel meter

Scientific Method Procedure A step by step list of how to run your experiment. Make sure to write the steps in order. May want to use transition words like first, next, then, after, that, or finally. Example: Set the decibel meter up Students come in and find their seats. Teacher gives an assignment. Next the teacher walks out of the classroom and stays gone for several minutes. Record decibel meters volume. Teacher walks back in to resume teaching. Record data.

Place graphs, charts, or tables under the results section. Scientific Method Results Results section is where you tell or describe the exact outcome using your data to support statements. Place graphs, charts, or tables under the results section. Example: According to my results, the classroom became nosier when the teacher walked out.

*A scientist hypothesis can be proven to be incorrect too. Scientific Method Conclusion Summarize your results, tell if the results support your hypothesis, relationship between dependent and independent variables. Example: My hypothesis was proven to be correct. The noise level in the classroom did rise when the teacher walked out. *A scientist hypothesis can be proven to be incorrect too. .

Scientific Method Three Types of Variables Controlled Variable: What you keep the same (same class, same students, same time of day) Independent Variable: What I change (If you are measuring whether a class is noisier without a teacher, the teacher leaving the room is the variable being changed) Dependent Variable: What I observe (this is something that you notice after you make your change, measuring the noise in the room in decibels)

Scientific Method Log Books Log books are kept by the scientists to record everything they have done, worked, experimented on for their project. Example of a Log Book Entry: September 25, 2017: I turned in my science fair topic idea into Mrs. Ready. October 6, 2017: I planted my seeds into the appropriate containers.

The report is a minimum of 100 words or more. Scientific Method Research Report The report is basically a background research one. The students need to have background information in order to explain the theory behind their experiment. For instance if you are conducting an experiment to test for the presence of carbon dioxide, then the report has to be about what carbon dioxide is and why it is important. The report is a minimum of 100 words or more.

Dr. Amanda Ready: Expert Science Fair Advisor Scientific Method Bibliography Our scientists will need a minimum of three sources. Books, web sites, newspaper or magazine articles, or interview someone. Examples: Web Site www.awesomelessciencefair.adv Person Dr. Amanda Ready: Expert Science Fair Advisor Book Ready, Amanda, How to Do a Groovy Science Fair Project; Hernando, MS Lewis Chicken Group, 2017 Author’s name Title of book City, State Publisher’s name Publication Date :

Backboards Backboard Layout Purchase a 3 sided board (do not buy the small one.) Labels: Make or use a stencil to create headings. Can purchase a colored board, paint your board, contact paper, etc… you don’t have to do this. Follow the outline (this will be sent home at a later date). Can use photos as long as your child’s face is not in them. Please do not put their name anywhere on the front of the board. Participant’s name goes on the back of everything, no where on the front. I will send home your scientist’s category and number at a later date.

Science Fair Club Starting Date: Monday, October 2, 2017 Time: 7:05-7:30am Every Monday through January 2018 This club is specifically for students who need questions answered, are they on the right track with their experiments, etc.. They do not have to come every week only when they have a problem or need extra guidance.
