Annette Holtkamp - 2nd HEP Information Summit, DESY, May 20-21, 2008 History 1962: DESY HEP Index 1968: SPIRES DB at SLAC 1974: Birth of SPIRES HEP, jointly run by SLAC and DESY 1985: Email interface to SPIRES May 1991: WWW on central CERN machines Aug 1991: Birth of arXiv at Los Alamos Dec 1991: Web interface to SPIRES, first US web server 1993: CERN preprint server on the web 1996: onset of the Google era 2000: CERN Document Server 2002: CDS digital library software (→ Invenio) Annette Holtkamp - 2nd HEP Information Summit, DESY, May 20-21, 2008

Annette Holtkamp - 2nd HEP Information Summit, DESY, May 20-21, 2008 Recent History May 07: 1st HEP Information Resource Summit (SLAC) Meeting of HEP information providers to discuss future information systems Spring 07: HEP survey Investigation on the information behaviour of HEP scientists proving the outstanding importance of community-based information systems and informing on needs, wishes, and expectations Annette Holtkamp - 2nd HEP Information Summit, DESY, May 20-21, 2008

Annette Holtkamp - 2nd HEP Information Summit, DESY, May 20-21, 2008 Status 1 year ago HEP community Relying on community-based information services Growing information needs Expecting state-of-the-art tools Two “competing” community-run information systems With slightly different focus (institutional – subject repository) Much duplication of cataloguing and enrichment work Annette Holtkamp - 2nd HEP Information Summit, DESY, May 20-21, 2008

Annette Holtkamp - 2nd HEP Information Summit, DESY, May 20-21, 2008 Status 1 year ago SPIRES Very popular Veteran system showing cracks: Old and lonely database engine Massive effort needed to change codebase Much time spent on fixing instead of developing Looking for a new platform CDS / Invenio: Modern digital library system Lightly used (mainly institutional repository) High potential Perfect match? Annette Holtkamp - 2nd HEP Information Summit, DESY, May 20-21, 2008

Annette Holtkamp - 2nd HEP Information Summit, DESY, May 20-21, 2008 1st Summit, SLAC, May 07 Goal: Bring together important information providers in HEP Discuss future of HEP information systems Prepare ground for cooperative projects Most important result: CERN, DESY, Fermilab, SLAC decide to jointly develop a modern information platform for HEP → Invenio + SPIRES = Inspire Annette Holtkamp - 2nd HEP Information Summit, DESY, May 20-21, 2008

Annette Holtkamp - 2nd HEP Information Summit, DESY, May 20-21, 2008 People behind Inspire SLAC: Ann Redfield, Pat Kreitz Travis Brooks, Mike Sullivan Fermilab: Heath O’Connell, Rob Atkinson DESY: Annette Holtkamp, Kirsten Sachs, Zaven Akopov CERN: Jens Vigen, Salvatore Mele Tim Smith, Jean-Yves Le Meur, Tibor Šimko Marko Niinimäki, Radoslav Ivanov . . . library cataloguers, curators, Invenio programmers Annette Holtkamp - 2nd HEP Information Summit, DESY, May 20-21, 2008

Formal agreement by laboratory managements …Our discipline is living a golden era of global projects, with laboratories and universities worldwide collaborating in the operation, design and construction of present and future detectors and accelerators, and the common vision of CERN, DESY, Fermilab and SLAC is to build an unique global HEP information platform. We therefore express our interest in engaging resources towards two goals: The realisation of INSPIRE. This new platform will merge the content of the SPIRES and CDS databases, using the Invenio technology, reproducing and extending SPIRES functionalities. It will be built by a collaboration of our Digital Library experts. The long-term maintenance and enrichment of INSPIRE, combining the complementary experience accrued in the curation of the SPIRES and CDS databases, to meet the current and evolving needs of our communities. We look forward to a prosperous worldwide collaboration to build and operate INSPIRE, which will empower scientists with new tools for successful research at the onset of an era of new discoveries.
