Who are disabled people? And Why Our History is important! (Tara Flood, Director, ALLFIE)
Our History – why things need to change! In the 1950’s and 1960’s disabled people and their families were encouraged and in some cases forced to live and go to school away from their families. Most of the decisions about disabled people’s lives were made by other people like doctors, teachers and relatives.
Taking Control of our Lives Disabled people decided they wanted to be in charge of their own lives and to have their own voice so they set up disabled peoples organisation. Disabled peoples organisations are run and controlled by disabled people Disabled people have developed the motto Nothing about us without us
