WHAT IS A FLOOR PLAN? A floor plan is drawing of a building with the roof removed as seen from above. The cutting plane/cutting plane line is the imaginary line or slice on a floor plan drawing showing where a building is “cut.” The height at which each floor of the building is cut is typically 4 feet above the ground.

WHAT IS A FLOOR PLAN? In a floor plan, the building is cut horizontally and all items above 4 feet are removed so that only the portion the floor below 4 feet above the ground can be seen from above. What method of drawings is used to create a floor plan? Orthographic Projection. The portion of the building seen from above may be in three dimensions but the drawing shows these elements only in two dimensions: length and width. There is no sense of height. How are objects above 4 feet shown on a floor plan? Objects above 4 feet are shown with dashed lines because they are hidden. What are some of the objects shown with dashed lines in the floor plan on this slide? Shelving in the closet, closet rod, wall cabinets in the kitchen.

WHAT IS A PROGRAM? A program is a detailed list of the clients needs that must be fulfilled by the final design. The program is the first step an architect takes to design a building. The architect meets with the client to discuss what are requirements for the project. Based on the budget, things that client wants may or may not be possible. However, all needs of the client must be met through the end product.

WHAT ARE BUBBLE DIAGRAMS? A bubble diagram is a simple diagram of rooms shaped like circles, not necessarily drawn to a specific scale. The purpose of this diagram is for architects to understand the relationship between rooms Architects normally create bubble diagrams during or after the initial meeting with the client.

WHAT ARE SCHEMATIC DIAGRAMS? A schematic diagram is a drawing produced later in the design process that more fully explains the architectural design to show the general relationships and space requirements of the project Schematic diagrams typically don’t have dimensions or construction notes and are more for the purpose of showing the client the architects design intentions.

WHAT ARE CONSTRUCTION DRAWINGS? Construction drawings are very accurate drawings showing the design, location, and dimensions of all parts of the building. These drawings may be produced by the architect or engineers involved in the design process and are necessary for the contractor to determine the price of the project as well as to construct the building.
