Background The Tea Act (May 10, 1773) was meant to decrease the price of tea so the East India Company’s tea would sell in the colonial market AND get Britain taxes from the tea. Colonists were angered about taxes (Sugar, Stamp, Quartering Act) because patriot leaders were spreading the word about tyranny, unfair taxes, and how the colonists should be free of British control. Patriots tried to refuse the shipments of tea, but they came anyway.

Boston Tea Party December 16, 1773 On the night of December 16, 1773, Samuel Adams and the Sons of Liberty boarded three ships in the Boston harbor and threw 342 chests of tea overboard. It took nearly three hours for more than 100 colonists to empty the tea into Boston Harbor. The chests held more than 90,000 lbs. (45 tons) of tea, which would cost nearly $4,000,000 dollars today.

Boston Tea Party December 16, 1773 The Sons of Liberty dressed as Mohawk Native Americans for a 2 reasons. To “disguise” themselves and avoid punishment. They also were rejecting British culture and assuming the culture of “America.” The Sons of Liberty tried to reduce damages. Nothing but the tea and a padlock were damaged. The ships were kept safe and the padlock was replaced the next day. There was no theft of the tea. One patriot tried to take the tea but was stopped by the other Sons of Liberty. Their goal was to reject Britain.

That caffeine can’t be good for them! What about the fish? That caffeine can’t be good for them!

Retaliation & Outcome Until this point, the Patriot's boycotts were successful, the British repealed the acts and backed down. The British government reacted with several harsh laws to be known as the Intolerable Acts. The Boston Tea Party increased tensions between Britain and the colonies, pushing ever closer to war.
