Development Vocab

HDI vs. IHDI HDI Measures the human development not just economic growth Standard of living, knowledge (# of years of schooling for children entering school and for number of years the average 25 year old., health (LE) IHDI measures the loss of human development because of inequalities How are these achievements distributed amongst the people (per capita)

GDP vs. GNP GDP-Total value of products & Services produced within the territorial boundary of a country. GDP = C+G+I+NX GNP-Total value of Goods and Services produced by all nationals of a country (whether within or outside the country). GNP = C+G+I+NX+ overseas investments – domestic profits in the domestic economy

GNI Very similar to GNP Gross national income (GNI) is defined as the sum of value added by all producers who are residents in a nation, plus any product taxes (minus subsidies) not included in output, plus income received from abroad such as employee compensation and property income.

GDI vs. GII The GDI-The new GDI measures gender gaps in human development achievements by accounting for disparities between women and men in three basic dimensions of human development – health (LE), knowledge (school children and adults 25 years and older) and living standards (est. income) using the same component indicators as in the HDI. The GDI shows how much women are lagging behind their male counterparts and how much women need to catch up within each dimension of human development. It is good for understanding the real gender gap in human development achievements The Gender Inequality Index is a composite measure reflecting inequality in achievements between women and men in three dimensions: reproductive health (maternal mortality rate and adolescent BR), empowerment (govt. positions, secondary education)and the labor market.
