Physics 132 heat and thermodynamics Lecture: 8:30-10:00 AM TTh Instructor: MARLON FLORES SACEDON Doctor of Philosophy In Physics (Candidate) Master of Physics BS Civil Engineering

Course outline 6 hrs. per week (3 lec., 3 lab.) Credit: 4 units COURSE NUMBER : PHYSICS 132 COURSE TITLE : heat and thermodynamics COURSE DESCRIPTION : Temperature and Heat, Thermal properties of matter, the first law of thermodynamics, and the second law of thermodynamics PREREQUISITE : Phys 14 6 hrs. per week (3 lec., 3 lab.) Credit: 4 units

Course outline OBJECTIVE OF THE COURSE After taking the course the students should be able to: To acquire an understanding of the concept of temperature and heat as they relate they relate to microscopic objects. To explore the molecular basis of heat capacities of both gases and solids and to look at the various phases of matter --- gas, liquid, and solid---- and the conditions under which each occurs. To study the first law and second law of thermodynamics, and entropy

Course outline Chapter 1. Temperature and Heat Temperature and thermometers Temperature scale Temperature scale Chapter 2. Thermal Properties of Matter Equation of state Heat capacities Molecular properties of matter Molecular speeds Kinetic-Molecular model of an ideal gas Phases of matter Chapter 3. The First Law of Thermodynamics Thermodynamic system Kinds of thermodynamic process Work done during volume changes Internal energy of an ideal gas Paths between thermodynamic states Heat capacity of an ideal gas Internal energy and the first law of thermodynamics Adiabatic process for an ideal gas Chapter 4. The Second Law of Thermodynamic Directions of thermodynamic processes The second law of thermodynamics Heat Engine The Carnot cycle Internal-Combustion engines The Kelvin Temperature Scale Refrigeration Entropy

Course outline Grading System: Phys 11 Final Grades = 1/3 (midterm grade) + 2/3 (post midterm grade) Term Grades = 1/3 (laboratory grade) + 2/3 (lecture grade) Lecture grade = (obtain points from… quizzes + attendance + Exams) ÷ Total point x 100% Laboratory grade = (obtain points from… expt. reports + Phys research + Exams + attendance) ÷ Total point x 100% NOTE! “PASSED BOTH POLICY” This means that both lecture and laboratory should have a passing grades, otherwise will be mark “FAILED”.

Course outline Course Requirements: Grades in Math 12 or Math 13 Problem sets and assignments (Solutions to problem sets should be written on short size bond paper)

Course outline Classroom policy: Cellphones are not allowed during Exams. Submit solutions to all Problem Sets & Assignments NO REMOVAL EXAMS Use BOND PAPER to all submitted requirements and exam solutions Website: www.mfsacedon08.webs.com (for Exam results, grades, downloads, and other information)
