Group 7 – The Halogens Decreasing reactivity Some facts… 13/09/2018 Decreasing reactivity Some facts… 1) Reactivity DECREASES as you go down the group 2) At room temperature chlorine is a green gas, bromine is an orange liquid and iodine is a grey solid 3) Chlorine is used to sterilise water while iodine is used to sterilise wounds 4) Melting point, boiling point and density all increase going down the group 5) Reactions with group 1 metals: metal+ halogen metal halide sodium + chlorine sodium chloride
