Do Now 1. Who founded Mormonism? 2. Where are the headquarters for Mormonism? 3. What do Mormons believe in?

How did it began? It started in the 17th Century when African slaves brought their western and central African religious traditions to the Caribbean. Voodoo- means god or spirit in western African language. It was the Fon who brought their religion with them from Africa to Haiti.

The Beginnings Many African slaves were sent to Haiti and the following events occurred: Between 1730-1790 the religion emerged. It focused on ancestral spirits. During the revolutionary period of Haiti between 1790—1800, the religion grew. However, during 1800-1815 the religion was suppressed due to the leadership of Toussaint Louverture. Since 1975, the religion has re-emerged.

Why was Voodoo feared? The fear was started by French slave owners and they viewed this as very suspicious. The French were also outnumbered vastly by the African slaves in Haiti and the religious practices were viewed demonic.

Beliefs Bondye- is the supreme god and is very abstract. Lwa- are the spirits. They are manifested through Bondye’s body. The Lwa are over any human beings and everything. In Voodoo it is believed that they dominate or control the directions of the earth. Offerings such as food are given to the Lwa. Souls and spirits of ancestors are worshipped.
