Types of Soil Matt. 13:1-9, 18-23
The Path Beaten down by constant traffic Those whose hearts are hardened – Eph. 4:17-20 Not that the gospel is beyond their understanding – John 8:43-47 Many would rather not understand, choosing ignorance and, ultimately, destruction
The Rocky Ground There is ground, but it is thin So many start well, but do not endure – 2 Tim. 4:9-10 One with depth can endure persecution, like Shadrach, Meshach and Abed-Nego Rocks can be taken away! – Heb. 10:36-39
The Thorns One who has heard the gospel and is glad to hear it Yet God is not the first priority in their life – 1 Tim. 6:8-10 The rich young ruler is a prime example – Mark 10:19- 22 Thorns can also be killed, but only if not given nourishment
The Good Soil One whose heart is receptive, not weighed down or cynical – Acts 16:13-15 They hear the Word, and obey, knowing the benefits it holds – Gal. 5:22-25 What a shame that so much ripe soil goes to waste!
Conclusion When Jesus first told this parable, the church had not been established. But His words ring true today as they will as long as this world endures. People may have, at different points in their life, one type or another. But regardless of where you started or have been, only one will be fruitful.
