Understanding the internet
In this session we will look at what makes up a web address (URL) what we can ignore in a web address to help our internet research domain names & domain extensions some country extensions to domain names
By the end of the lesson you will be able to: Explain what a URL is Match domain extensions to their descriptions Recognise the domain extensions of other countries Differentiate between the different websites of one company
Uniform Resource Locator URL stands for: Uniform Resource Locator
http://www. World Wide Web Hyper Text Transfer Protocol Most websites begin this way so you can ignore this part of the URL when looking for appropriate websites for your research.
The domain name comes after http://www. e.g. http://www.bbc.co.uk/ would take you to the home page of a company called the BBC
The rest of the URL just describes the pathway separated by / e.g. http://www.bbc.co.uk/arts/multimedia/turner/ So we can see that not only is the link from the home page of bbc: it is then taken from the arts page and it is then taken from a sub-section called multimedia and it is then taken from a page about turner
Sometimes the URL will end with html. html stands for: hypertext markup language It is the computer language or code most internet pages are programmed in
bbc = descriptive part of name co.uk = domain extension domain names e.g. www.bbc.co.uk/ bbc = descriptive part of name co.uk = domain extension
