Symbols and Parallels There is a hidden underground “tunnel” in Gattaca! What is it? There is an “Unchartered Forest” in Gattaca! What is it? There is a “heart condition” in Anthem! What is it? Who is the “Council” in Gattaca? There is a “light box” in Gattaca! What is it? There is a “rocket” in Anthem! What is it? Vincent vs Equality: Discuss Similarities and Differences!

Parallels and Symbols Discuss a major theme that is revealed in both Anthem and Gattaca. In your discussion explain how the theme is revealed through the author/director’s use of symbols. You may also discuss the major characters and how their actions impact the theme.

Journey! In both Anthem and Gattaca, the main characters go on both a literal and figurative journey. In one or both these works, discuss the literal and figurative journey and how it affects characterization or theme.

Introduction Keep it short Always include Author and Title of work (director if a film) Thesis: a summary of prompt with your take (opinion) added. Attention getter if appropriate (optional)

Sample Imagine a life without choices, a life of your own but controlled by others with no freedom of choice. Ayn Rand in her novella Anthem uses many important symbols to show how one man, Equality, fights this life using his individual spirit. Her theme of the passion of the individual is revealed during this fight.

Conclusion Re-visit your thesis: If ever there was the perfect vehicle for exploring the human spirit, Ayn Rand nailed it with Anthem

Make a Prediction: In the end, Equality may have been alone with only his wife Liberty, but his plans to share his new found freedom with others shows that he truly will not be alone for long.

Issue a Call to Action: Equality’s journey to find his voice and individual spirit should be a wake up call to others who may want to abandon the “we” society and experience true freedom.

Use a quote: “We are one” resonated so negatively with Equality moving him to journey towards the “I” which he surely did in the end.
