SMA Main focus during this task: Literacy – interpreting information from a bulk of text Peer assessment – using a set of criteria to assess and suggest improvements

Deoxyribonucleic acid or DNA is a molecule that contains the instructions an organism needs to develop, live and reproduce. The backbone of DNA is based on a repeated pattern of a sugar group and a phosphate group. The full name of DNA, deoxyribonucleic acid, gives you the name of the sugar present – deoxyribose which drawn using a pentagon. The other repeating part of the DNA backbone is a phosphate group. A phosphate group is attached to the sugar molecule, shown by a small circle; together, this makes the “sugar-phosphate backbone”. The final piece that we need to add to this structure before we can build a DNA strand is one of four organic bases. In DNA, these bases are cytosine (C), thymine (T), adenine (A) and guanine (G); These are called "nucleotides".   A DNA strand is simply a string of nucleotides joined together. Nucleotides are attached to the sugar-phosphate backbone and together to form two long strands that spiral to create a structure called a double helix. If you think of the double helix structure as a ladder, the phosphate and sugar molecules would be the sides, while the bases would be the rungs. Base pairs are bonded together with hydrogen bonds as one side of a nucleotide is slightly negative causing an attraction between the neighboring nucleotide; A-T with a double hydrogen bond and C-G with a triple hydrogen bond. The bases on one strand pair with the bases on another strand: adenine pairs with thymine, and guanine pairs with cytosine.

You will be peer assessed What do you think? Read the information on DNA structure and underline / highlight the most important points Using the information on your sheets, interpret the information and illustrate what you think the structure of DNA looks like. Draw the structure of DNA in the first box on your sheet Label your diagram You will be peer assessed 5 mins

Plenary: Question time! From the information you have learnt today, for a question and label it Q. Answer your question. Label it A. Get ready to ask!

Plenary: Who am I? On your whiteboards, write down the feature of the bacteria that I am describing. I am responsible for the movement of the cell. I strengthens the cell I carry most of the genetic information in the cell I control the movement of substances in and out of the cell I can code for anything in the cell I am where most of the reaction happen in the cell I am the first thing to replicate when I need the cell to divide.
