Goals Know how to access the tools Know how to seek new data elements and values Understand the importance of community supported, uniform data definitions Understand the benefits of collaborative approaches to common issues in public health

American Immunization Registry Association--AIRA To promote and advocate for universal population-based registry standards. To contribute to the development and maintenance of immunization registries. To advocate for immunization registries through legislation, policy development and public information. To build stronger partnerships with and between public and private registries, vendors, providers and federal agencies. To collaborate with agencies and organizations, both domestic and international, on issues of concern to immunization registries. Brief description and goals

Data Exchange Work Group Goals: Promote development of data exchange standards Steering committee Data definition—vocabulary Message structure Transport layer

Data Definitions Workgroup IIS Staff IIS vendors CDC AIRA support Monthly conference calls

Work Group Goals Work group identified the goals of: documenting the IIS community consensus for data elements and definitions Supporting interoperability efforts to communicate between systems Supporting agreed upon definitions for data elements and code sets to allow cross-registry analysis Support maintenance of HL7 Implementation Guide Coordinate with Messaging and Transport layer groups

Outcome Created a spreadsheet Data elements with definitions Code sets with definitions Developing a process for keeping this up to date Coordinate with the other committees

How do you add a code or value? The AIRA website has a link to request new or changed codes The Data Definition work group will review each request The Steering committee will prioritize AIRA will coordinate with external organizations like HL7 organization

Coordination with Other Groups HL7 organization Public Health Data Standards Consortium Public Health Informatics Institute

Conclusions In 2 years the work group has agreed on a mission Reviewed existing codes and code sets Created a tool to consolidate community agreed upon codes and their definitions Begun work on a process to accept requests for new or changed codes or code sets.

Conclusions Working together takes time and effort Consensus decisions promote standards acceptance Including all sides assures that the needs of all are addressed
