Beach Vacation Northwood Science 2016

Essential Questions What is heat? Why do somethings get hotter than others? How is heat transferred?

Performance Expectations MS-PS3-3. Apply scientific principles to design, construct, and test a device that either minimizes or maximizes thermal energy transfer.* MS-PS3-4. Plan an investigation to determine the relationships among the energy transferred, the type of matter, the mass, and the change in the average kinetic energy of the particles as measured by the temperature of the sample.

Energy of motion (kinetic energy) that results in a temperature Thermal Energy* Energy of motion (kinetic energy) that results in a temperature What has thermal energy on the beach? * Review!!! Kinetic energy (the energy of motion) can take place on a small scale, like molecules bumping into one another, or a larger scale like the rotation of a water wheel

To move from one area to another Transfer To move from one area to another Probe- Does something need to be matter to be transferred? Transferring energy. If you touch a hot grill the heat is transferred to you and you may be burned.

Heat The transfer of thermal energy between substances at different temperatures Heat =/= Thermal Energy. Everything has thermal energy, but there needs to be a difference in thermal energy for heat. Glass of room temp water has thermal energy but is not changing the temperature of the room it is in.

Temperature The average kinetic energy of the particles of a substance Looks at all the particles in a substance and talks about their average speed. Is a correlation. Does not mean every particle is exactly the same speed.

Radiation Transfer of energy without direct contact. Can go through space

Conduction Transfer of energy through direct contact. Particles collisions Conduction on the beach might include walking on hot sand and/or cooking food,

Convection The transfer of thermal energy through the motion of particles in a fluid* *Fluid- A gas or liquid Convection currents are responsible for a good deal of our weather

Conductor A substance that allows for the transfer of energy Emphasize the point of contact between the metal and the food.

Insulator A substance that slows or stops the transfer of energy

An area with defined boundaries System An area with defined boundaries Ex: Classroom, School, District, each have defined boundaries. Can be a system. Isolated- Cooler on the beach, Closed- Sealed Water bottle on the beach, Open- the ocean

Surroundings (to a system) The area outside of the defined boundaries of the system Beach= Surroundings Basically anything that is not the system but has an effect or is effected by Cooler= The System

Law of Conservation of Energy* Energy is not created or destroyed only transferred and transformed. *review Link to law of conservation of mass

Radiation Heat Law of Conservation of Energy Temperature Convection Transfer Conduction Conductor Insulator System
