What Are Storage Devices? Storage devices use a persistent media to maintain files. Storage device technologies determine the media, size, and portability of a device. These devices, which are also referred to as drives, mass storage, and auxiliary storage, can be categorized in three ways: Internal, such as a hard disk, or external, such as a memory key Removable or permanent media Magnetic, optical, or solid state technology This one as well This has no reason for being here other than a delay object

Optical Technology Optical technology uses a drive with a laser and an optoelectronic sensor. The media required with optical technology is a compact or DVD disc made of polycarbonate plastic. In general, optical technology refers to anything that relates to light or vision, whether it be visible light or infrared light that performs a specific function. Solid State Technology Solid state devices are the smallest, most portable devices because the technology requires no moving parts. SSD media is Flash memory A grid with two tiny transistors at each cell. Each cell corresponds to a bit. Applying a charge to a cell stores a 0 Applying a stronger charge stores a 1 Entire grid of transistors is encased in a small, hard plastic, shell. Some devices are smaller than a quarter and can store 2MB or more in a case smaller and thinner than a quarter. Encased media often directly attached to a USB plug, but can also have conductive material imprinted so the media can slide into a digital camera slot.

Magnetic Technology Magnetic technology allows for storage devices that range in capacity up to many gigabytes, and uses different patterns of magnetisation in a magnetisable material to store data. is a form of non-volatile memory medium for holding temporary information Examples of Magnetic Technology: DVDs Magnetic tape Floppy disks Zip Drive

Damaging Files Storage media can be sensitive. Care should be taken to avoid damaging files. corruption of a file is when a file becomes unusable or inaccessible. Corruption can be caused from improperly closing a program, your computer shutting down accidentally, crashing, etc. To prevent files from damaging: -Keep magnets away from media -Handle CDs and DVDs carefully -Store CD/DVDs in a safe place -Keep them away from hot temperatures or humidity In case files will corrupt, there is a chance you can recover the file from a backup or you can use a recovery program for a possibility for recovery.
