A Hole in the Head Robert Kirchhoff 2016, Slovakia ..

Introduction: A Hole in the Head The «documentary essay» focusses on the remembrance of the Roma holocaust during the Second World War; But it is not just focussing on the past, but rather on the present remembering of the events by survivors and family members The film consists mainly of testimonies, conversations, stories of survivors

Post-screening discussion: A Hole in the Head Which dimensions in the documentary have to do with Europe? What is the role of memory, and the reception of memory, in the construction of public historical knowledge on the Roma holocaust? What makes the remembrance of the Roma holocaust particularly cumbersome? What is the role of ordinary, local people in the events? What are the similarities and differences between the time in which the traumatic events happened and Europe today? What role do the ‘photography’ and symbolism play in the documentary essay? What is the dimension of ‘alternative facts’ in the documentary?
