Dairy Goats Main Use: Main Characteristics: Breeds: Milk production Feminine Refined Capacious Breeds: Toggenburg Alpine Nubian Saanan Oberhasli LaMancha Toggenburg is the breed we are looking at today. Dairy goat breeds are separated based on ear shape and overall color, but they are all used for the same thing: milk

Meat Goats Main Use: Main Characteristics: Breeds: Meat production Thick muscling Big boned Good fat cover Breeds: Boer Goat Spanish Goat Tennessee Goat

Meat Goat or Dairy Goat?

Your Task: Choose a doe to breed to this buck for each of the scenarios, and explain your choice. Scenario 1: You want the offspring to only produce meat. Scenario 2: You want the offspring to produce quality milk and meat. The side of the room will go to pen #1 and choose from the does in that pen ONLY. The right side of the room will go to pen #2 and choose from the does in that pen ONLY. You will have 5 minutes to decide, write down the doe’s name then we will come back to the room. You will then have 1 minute to finish your explanation. The white does will be #1, the grayish does will be #2

What Were we Doing? Scenerio 1: Inbreeding: Scenerio 2: Hybridization: Continued breeding of individuals with similar characteristics. Scenerio 2: Hybridization: Crossing organisms than have different traits to bring together the best of both organisms. On your handouts, circle the scenario in which we would have a hybrid offspring. What two traits were we wanting in our offspring? Now underline the scenario in which inbreeding could occur if we continued breeding these individuals over the next few generations.
