WHO WOULD BE THE AUDIENCE FOR YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT? Ben Fox

When planning the plot for our film we thought long and hard about the genre that it would be, once we had set it as a horror/thriller we set to work at finding who would be our target audience. We decided that our film would be 16 – 24 this was after lots of research into the certificate of out film which we found would be 15, furthermore other films with a similar or the same genre’s target audience. Lastly we did some market research into the sorts of people who visit the cinema and watch films in particular horror movies.

We then embarked on some market research, firstly I spoke to a group of men around the ages of 22-24. After explaining the plot and what we hoped to do with our film I got very positive feedback with 100% of the group saying that they would pay to watch it at a cinema. One of them said ‘I believe that you have a very strong plot and can envisage myself watching it however I'm not sure if my girlfriend would enjoy this as much.’ from this piece of research we then decided to ask another group.

This time we decided to ask a group of females to see if there perspective of the film differed to the males. Again these women were around the age of 20-24 and once again I explained the plot and the affect we were trying to make on the audience. The feedback was mixed however 50% of the women did say that they would go of there own accord to watch ‘The Waiting’. One women I asked said ‘I like the idea of this movie however I don’t especially like horror movies therefore wouldn’t choose to go and see this if I had the choice, but if I my boyfriend took me to watch it I wouldn’t complain.

Having spoken to these two groups we decided to up the age, we spoke to a group of couples of the age 40+. The feedback after having explained the plot was significantly lower praise for our film then the previous groups with out 20% of the people asked saying that they enjoy horror movies and would watch our movie. From this we did not take it personally we had just created our final target audience.

To conclude we found our final audience to be mostly males between the age of 16-24 this is because of the thrill affect of the whole movie. The elder generation is more into action and comedy's whereas our audience would test there emotions even if it was watching from behind the sofa.
