The Ocean Deep or What is “Inner Space”?

Do Now What do you think each piece of equipment is used for?

Question? How difficult is it to see underwater without a facemask? Try to see if you can tell how much change is at the bottom of the tank without a face mask. Put on a face mask and try again, is it easier? Why?

History of Diving 4500 years ago the ancient Greeks, using newly developed glass, made facemasks and used them to dive for ornamental shells.

Diving Chamber The diving chamber was a huge barrel that contained a limited supply of air! It was attached to a ship, limited movement.

Diving Suit The Diving Suit (1873)was made of watertight canvas and had a heavy metal helmet. Air was pumped from the surface through a tube into the helmet. Limited movement, still attached to the ship.

The History of Diving

SCUBA SCUBA- self contained underwater breathing apparatus was developed by Jacques Cousteau and his partner Emil Gagnan in 1942. It allowed for greater movement and freedom underwater.
