Group Riding Expect “Single File” on many of our mountain roads You may need to give those in front of you some space, especially heading into mountain passes. If you need some room, let the rider behind you know by giving the “slow down” signal

Filling in – If a rider leaves the group you should “fill in” and tighten up the formation. Do Not “cross traffic” We prefer you maintain your lane and move forward when signaled by the rider you are passing! Copyright © 2017 by The Hartford. Group Lane Change SWEEP is Always Moving Group Lane Change SWEEP is Always Moving! YOU always follow the Road Captain! Road Captain SWEEP

As the Road Captain moves, the group follows when the lane is clear Sweep

***2 Lanes Merging into 1*** ***NEW*** In this case, the Sweep will take the Left Lane. Left side slides over, Right Side remains in the lane. Both sides will then merge back to a single group

Mountain Riding Braking Downhill Uphill Engine Braking Weight is shifted to the front wheel Braking should be applied evenly between the front and rear brakes with slight emphasis on the FRONT brake Uphill Weight is shifted to the rear wheel Braking should be applied evenly between the front and rear brakes with slight emphasis on the REAR brake Engine Braking Downhill – Down shift to slow you down so you don’t burn out your brakes. Let your engine help you slow down and maintain a safe speed so you use your brakes sparingly.

Mountain Riding Gear Don’t Panic! Make sure you are in the appropriate gear when heading into a curve or steep hairpin Shifting in a turn, especially a steep hairpin, can cause problems such as a stall. You need to make sure your gear is appropriate for climbing out of the turn after the turn is made Don’t Panic! We all get tense or panic when heading into a surprise turn or we misjudge a turn as we approach! You know your skill level Head over chin – lean into the turn Slide a cheek! If you are not familiar with these techniques, now is not the time to try to change your riding style.

Ask Questions Don’t be afraid to ask questions Know what to expect so you can assess your ability compared to the ride ahead. Ask questions during the ride, know what to expect on the next leg Don’t be afraid to tell your Road Captain about your areas of opportunity We want to lead the group based on the abilities of the riders so speak up. Avoid surprises and enjoy your ride.

YOU are responsible for YOUR OWN SAFETY!

We ride and have fun. Because that’s what we do!
