Maybe you can help… See if you can learn about fantasy and realism, to help teach the people in my kingdom, so they are no longer confused. Sadly…all the people and animals in my kingdom have lived here in Fantasyland for so long that they have forgotten the difference between fantasy and realism. Good evening young lords and ladies. I am King Fredrick of Fantasyland. I rule over a large kingdom filled with wondrous sights to behold.

What does FANTASY mean? When you say something is fantasy or make-believe, then it is something that is not real. Most of the time, it is something created by someone’s imagination. If something is fantasy or make-believe, then it is something that cannot happen in real life. Example: The dragon flew over the kingdom, looking for a meal. This is an example of fantasy, because dragons are not real.

The chipmunk slept in a bed of acorns. What does REALISM mean? When you say something has realism then it is something that can really happen. Things that are realistic or have realism do exist in the world. You can find them somewhere on Earth. Example: The chipmunk slept in a bed of acorns. This is an example of realism, because chipmunks and acorns do exist on Earth.

Okay…now that you have learned what fantasy and realism mean, let’s see if you can decide whether the following sentences show FANTASY or REALISM.

The purple teddy bear drove the motorcycle down the highway. FANTASY This sentence is fantasy because while teddy bears are real, they cannot drive motorcycles.

The lovely butterfly landed on a sweet smelling red rose. REALISM This sentence shows realism because butterflies can land on a rose, and both butterflies and roses exist on Earth.

Jamal raised his hand in class, to get his teacher’s attention. REALISM This sentence shows realism because students do raise their hands in class, and students and teachers exist on Earth.

The unicorn ran quickly through the forest. FANTASY This sentence shows fantasy since unicorns do not exist in real life, even though forests are real.

One lucky day, the fisherman caught a mermaid in his net. FANTASY This sentence shows fantasy since mermaids are imaginary creatures that do not exist on Earth.

The jazz musician plays a beautiful song on his trumpet. REALISM This sentence shows realism because jazz musicians really do exist on Earth, and they can play beautiful songs.

On the back of a dragonfly, the fairy flew home to see her family. FANTASY This sentence shows fantasy since fairies do not exist on Earth, and it is not possible to ride a dragonfly.

In space, the shuttle was able to take pictures of Earth. REALISM This sentence shows realism since space shuttles do exist, and they can take pictures of Earth from far away.

The construction workers looked at the plans to see what to do next. REALISM This sentence shows realism because construction workers do use plans to build things.

After getting dressed, the invisible man went for a walk. FANTASY This sentence shows fantasy since people cannot become invisible.

Well done lords and ladies! Now for the real challenge! You will be presented with four sentences, and asked to find the one that shows either FANTASY or REALISM.
